Card and mobile payment opportunities: A framework to consider potential winners and losers and a snapshot of the future payments landscape in Africa

Abstract
This article introduces a framework for evaluating consumer payments opportunities. It looks at the drivers of change in the way consumers pay and the enablers of change in the way consumers pay. The cornerstones of the payments industry and fundamental change in consumer behaviour are also described. The article discusses the ‘Big 5’ game changing payments innovations of the past 50 years in South Africa, and goes on to suggest how the framework could be used to make a prediction about the future of consumer payments in Africa.

Graeme Holmes has been with Nedbank for five years as Head of Consumer Cards.
